Place of historical and cultural importance of udaipur – Bagore Ki Haveli

Bagore Ki Haveli is an ancient building that stands near Gangaur Ghat in the environs of Pichola Lake. The grandeur of the architecture of the mansion speaks for its delicate carved work and excellent glass work. Bagore Ki Haveli was built by Amir Chand Badwa, in the 18th century, who was the Chief Minister at the Mewar Royal Court at that time. When Amar Chand died, the building came under the possession of Mewar State.

The mansion of Bagore (Bagore ki Haveli) acquired its name in 1878 when it made the abode to Maharana Shakti Singh of Bagore, who further built three stories to the main structure. The mansion that was left vacant for around 50 years, during this long period of desertion, the building deteriorated. And in 1986, the building was handed over to the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC).

The West Zone Cultural Centre planned to renovate the haveli into a museum. Seeing that the Haveli was an architectural museum by itself, the WZCC restored its typical and charming architectural style, henceforth depicting Mewar’s patrician culture. The intricate carvings and the beautiful glassworks are the major highlights of this 18th-century haveli. The museum also showcases the belongings of the royal kings and modern art.

Along with this,visitors can also watch dice-games, hand fans, jewelry boxes and pan boxes, nutcrackers, rose water sprinklers, copper vessels etc. The Queen’s Chamber showcases alluring paintings of Mewar dynasty. Beautiful peacocks created with small pieces of colored glass are one of the key places of interest. This splendid building has 138 rooms with well-arranged balconies, terraces, courtyards, and corridors.

Intricate and fine mirror work is a jaw-dropping sight; while meandering through the beautiful balconies and rooms you can also see the private quarters of the royal ladies, their bathrooms, dressing rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, worship rooms and recreation rooms.

The Haveli is opened for tourists all days of the week from 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM. The courtyards of Bagore ki Haveli are decked in the traditional fineries of Rajasthan in the evenings. Women with stacks of earthen pots dance to local beats and there is a puppet show as well. The haveli looks marvelous with glowing lights in the night.
